Weekly Blog 20

Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Prom is tomorrow and I am freaking out.

I dont know what to do with my hair, tia is doing my makeup, I need to paint my nails but I work tonight so painting them before work totally defeats the purpose.

Wow, this is also my last blog post for grade 11.

Overall I think this has been a great year, other than math first semester and chem second. All of my classes have been filled with great people who I enjoy being around and for the most part I have no complaints about teachers.

I am super pumped for senior year and hopefully the student council enchances the little things thus making it the best year yet.

Weekly Blog 19

I cannot wait. The semester is almost over and that means I'm free. Well free from school, I still have to coach, work at food basics and the golf course.

I also cannot wait to sleep in during summer days considering my lack of sleep is getting to me.

Tan, sleep, work out, work, coach soccer and eat is pretty much what my summer will consist of. Also a trip to Newfoundland to visit my family, a trip to Toronto for a Jays game and finally a little cross baorder shopping in Buffalo! Woohoooo!

Overall the idea that I do not have to walk into school, with constant thoughts running through the back of my head "another long day" "quiz third block" "weight room in gym" "hockey after school" is pure perfection to me.

RAFT #2

R.A.F.T
Role: Myself as a Writer Audience: Movie Agent/Director Format: Memo
Theme: Violence and Sexism in the Book
Sent to: Movie Agency
Sent from: Writer Alicia Hillier
Topic: Violence and Sexism in "Of Mice and Men"

In the novel, Of Mice and Men, there are several different aspects of behavior that must be looked at very carefully and understood in depth in order for there to be an accurate portrayal of the novel. The first of these is the violence in the book and how it must be portrayed. Normally violence in movies is quite brutal and is usually gruesome and the characters are evil and bloodthirsty. However in Of Mice and Men the violence often has a different and unique tone to it that actors really must account for in a movie portrayal. Another aspect of the book that must be interpreted in the right way is the sexism in the book, which at that time was something that was very prevalent. With Curly's wife, she must be a strong but sensitive female that has large hopes and dreams, that are restricted due to the sexism by the men in the novel.
The violence in the book is something that is very important to the development of several characters and must be considered when acting out scenes in a movie. For someone like Lennie, the examples of his violence in the book are different in the sense that he is rather innocent and actually would not like to hurt anyone, he is just unaware of his strength. For example when he kills the puppy in the barn and also Curly's wife, he isn't trying to kill them or even hurt them he just has sudden reactions to things, which ends badly most of the time. He is not an aggressive person but just doesn't understand his own strength at all. Another example of this is when Lennie crushes Curly's hand, but only because George tells him to. Lennie says over and over after how he really didn't mean or want to hurt Curly like that, he simply did it because George told him to, and Lennie does everything that George tells him to do in the book. So there must be a lot of attention paid to certain acts of violence that are done with innocence, especially with Lennie's character.
Sexism in the book revolves around one character for the most part as well. The sexism towards Curly's wife is very evident and while trying not to offend viewers, the sexism of the time in the great depression must be taken into account. She is always referred to as "Curley's Wife" so we never know her real name. She is also always flirted with by the men on the ranch because she's the only woman there, and she has no job to do on the ranch, other than to house-keep and take care of Curly. With all of this, the character of Curley's Wife still must be a strong woman with goals in life, and dreams that she wishes to achieve. She fights through adversity everyday and still has those hopes and dreams, before her sudden death. The speech before her death must be symbolic as to the restricting feeling that the sexism had on her, and that while the men had rough times in the Great Depression, the women were even worse off in many cases.

RAFT #1-

R.A.F.T
Role: George Audience: Himself/Others who would read the journal eventually Format: Journal Entry
Topic: Lennie's Death
Dear Journal,
Yesterday was by far the saddest day that I have ever gone through and I still am in a state of shock over what happened. The fact is that I shot my best friend, the only true friend I ever had in this world, he stood by me now matter what and I just can't believe that I shot him. I know that I had good intentions and it was probably for the best, but not having him around is making me feel sick to my stomach, I feel somewhat responsible for everything.
What happened was Lennie had been left in the barn alone because all the rest of us guys were having a real good time playing horseshoes outside. We were all having a great time, then out of nowhere we got a call from Candy that Curly's wife was laying in the barn dead, along with one of the puppies, who was also dead. There was no doubt in anyone's mind who had killed her, it had to be Lennie. Gosh I was so stupid to have let him in the barn by himself, I just got so distracted from the horseshoe tournament. Of course Lennie was nowhere to be found, he had run away after killing her, and no one knew where he went at all. No one except me of course. I knew he had ran to that spot out in the woods, near the pond, where I had told him to run if he ever got into any trouble. The other guys were all already ready to go and hunt him down, and I knew they'd likely kill him when the found him, so I didn't have a lot of time. Thankfully I got to him before the others did, however I knew there wasn't much time and I felt I had no other choice, the other guys would just find him and he'd panic and be killed. Lennie was calm, and he was talking about the farm we always dreamed and talked about and he was happy. I couldn't let the others find him, I had to shoot him. I do take some comfort in knowing that he died quickly and while happy, because otherwise he would have been scared and frightened while the others killed him.
I feel somewhat responsible for the whole thing because I should have known better than to let Lennie in the barn alone with those puppies and Curly's wife. Lennie just didn't know any better is all. I mean I knew that we'd probably never own a big farm with a bunch of rabbits that he'd be able to raise, that was all a crazy American dream that could never happen to us, but dreaming with Lennie was one of the only things that kept me going in life. His optimism about things helped both of us get through a lot together, he was my only friend or family that I had in life and now that he's got I'm not really sure what lies ahead for me. I can only hope that Lennie is in a better place now, filled with rabbits and on a big farm like he always dreamed of. I hope one day I can have that down here, and even though it probably won't happen, I'll always keep dreaming. Lennie taught me to do that.

Weekly Blog 18

In all honesty I can not wait until this semester is over. I am beyond fed up with writing these blogs, doing chemistry labs, worrying about homework being due and studying for tests. I AM SO DONE. I studied hard for that poetry test and if it brings my 83 down I will be super disappointed.

The whole concept that I always have work to do and I never have time to just relax and take a bath or watch a hockey game without worrying about finishing up something drives me insane.

I am also considering online english for the summer and if I do not like my grade I'll redo it first semester. But I really do need a spare both semester considering I suck at math and I'm in physics ugh.

I know that online english is super risky but man oh man I don't really have a choice.

Anyways, I don't really have anything else to rant about for this week.

Weekly Blog 17

Have you ever had weekends that exhaust you more than the week?

I got back from EOSSA on friday night at 10pm, then worked 9-2 saturday and got home, did my chem assignment followed by my ISU intro.

Today is Sunday, I worked 8-2 and got home, made Matt's birthday brownies for school tomorrow, ate dinner, finished paragraphs 1,2,3,4 of my ISU.

I am currently laying on my bedroom floor waiting for the habs and rangers game to come on and I can barely keep my eyes open.

The feeling when you're so tired that your eyes feel dry and itchy sums up exactly how I feel right now. I just wish that there were weekends or even days where it's possible to sleep in and do nothing, worry about no homework or tests, I didn't need to go to work, and time was not an issue. Would it be too much to ask for to have one weekend like that? JUST ONE!?

Annotated Bibliography

Anonymous. Poem Hunter. 21 May 2014. 21 May 2014 <http://www.poemhunter.com/lawrence-ferlinghetti/>.
This source was used extensively for the poetry presentation on Lawrence Ferlinghetti while searching for online versions of his various famous poems. The credibility of the source may not seem great due to the fact it is anonymously posted, however the sole objective for this site was to find and look at examples of his poetry for the anthology. The intended audience for this site may be for students trying to find poems of specific poets for research; however the source could easily be used for anyone that wishes to read poetry from a wide variety of poets both past and present. One of the helpful parts of this site is that it sorts a poet's poems based on most popular, and it also contains background information as well as important quotations from the poets, also there were audio files for many poems. One thing that perhaps could be improved about the site could be the addition of analysis or summary of the poems, or just helpful things to remember while reading the poem.
Anonymous. KE.EN. 10 August 2011. 21 May 2014 <http://dekenny.wordpress.com/2011/08/10/fahrenheit-451-online-text/>.

This website served a very small purpose however it was still very helpful in terms of having an online version of the novel Fahrenheit 451. Its credibility may not have been the best because it was an English teacher's blog; however the copy of the book which was a pdf file was exactly the same as the novel so it helps immensely with using quotes from it in the essay outlines and essay. Its audience is clearly targeted for students of that teacher's classroom, or other students that are using the online version of the book. Anyone that wants to read it online would also find it very helpful as well. The good thing about having the online copy of the novel is that if you find yourself without the novel at some point but still want to read it, if you have a laptop or phone it can easily be read. This source while serving a very small purpose, was incredibly helpful.
Editors, Sparknotes. Sparknotes: Macbeth. 30 April 2014. 21 May 2014 <http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/macbeth/>.
This source from the website "Sparknotes" was used during the Macbeth unit for a bit of further research on the play. The credibility of Sparknotes is quite high amongst popular novels and their information and study guides provide great research for students and provoke deeper thought into novels with things like example essay questions. The intended audience for Sparknotes is for students to learn and study the novels they are currently working on in school. The different and great thing about Sparknotes that made it unique from other sites was the in depth analysis of the play that really helped me understand the deeper concepts of the play. Things like analysis of each character and also themes, motifs and symbols in the play really helped in understanding certain concepts. Also for studying for tests, the example quizzes and study questions help immensely to outline important things to remember before taking your test in school. Perhaps an improvement could be having different questions that are selected at random for practice quizzes.
Hiner, Kristi. Cliffsnotes. 21 May 2014. 21 May 2014 <http://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature/f/fahrenheit-451/book-summary>.
CliffsNotes is a rather popular website for studying novels, similar to Sparknotes, and it is a relatively useful tool for studying a novel that is being read. In particular, this source was used for research and novel study of Fahrenheit 451, my ISU novel. It is intended for a younger audience that would mainly be compromised of students that are trying to understand their novels further or do further research into their novels. There were several very helpful and unique things about the site such as the examples of critical essays on the novel combined with the analysis and practice study questions. Also, there was an audio overview of the novel which is a nice change from always looking at analysis and reading it. Overall the source was very helpful in provoking deeper thought about the novel and understanding its themes and motifs further.
Moran, James E. The History of Madness in Canada. 2009. 21 May 2014 <http://historyofmadness.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=80>.
This source was used for the Mental Health assignment and it was very helpful in terms of giving a background of information and history on the subject. The credibility of the site is fairly high given the credentials of the man who wrote the piece on mental health. In general, the audience for this source would be young people that want to learn more about the subject, or anyone really for that matter with an interest in mental health in Canada and its history. It helped provide a very good understanding of the subject and aided in touching on certain aspects of the history of mental health that one would not normally think about. One thing that could have been improved about the site is perhaps its user-friendliness in terms of finding what you're looking for quicker.
Parrot, Thomas Marc. Shakespeare Online. 10 August 2010. 21 May 2014 <http://www.shakespeare-online.com/plays/macbeth_1_1.html>.
This source was used extensively for the Macbeth unit because it had an online version of the play among other things and it was very effective. The credibility is quite high due to the fact that the text from the book matched the text on the website exactly, with no grammatical errors. This source's target audience is likely for students to use to research the play and look for quotes perhaps to use for essays and papers they are writing. However, any Shakespeare lover that would want to access his plays online would use this website as well. It is a really effective and useful source for getting an exact online version of the play, which really helps when finding quotes for papers that are done on the computer. Another great feature was the addition of explanatory notes on each section of the play. This helped extremely with explaining certain quotes that were hard to understand throughout the play. The source was in every way very helpful for the Macbeth unit.
Team, Schmoop Editorial. Schmoop. 11 November 2008. 21 May 2014 <http://www.shmoop.com/one-flew-over-cuckoos-nest/>.
This particular website called "Schmoop" was used to help with further research during the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest unit. It is a fairly credible website for getting general information and analysis on the novel and what is happening in it; however it definitely cannot be substituted for reading the novel itself because it does miss a fair amount of information. Its target audience would definitely be for students that are attempting to supplement their reading of the novel with further plot information, to make sure they are following the plot correctly and understanding. The source did have a somewhat helpful video summary of what the novel was about, which was good to watch before reading the novel itself, serving the same purpose as the back cover of a book would usually do. Then the general summary of each chapter made sure that full understanding of the novel was achieved. One thing that could maybe be improved about the source would be perhaps it could provide more in-depth analysis to help provoke deeper thought and discussion about the novel.

ISU OUTLINE

Written down on paper and shown to Mr. Murray instead.

Weekly Blog 16

EOSSA is tomorrow and I'm so pumped! We get to stay over night in Brockville and on friday I have high jump, triple and 4x400 relay.

I realize we probably won't advance further past this round because the competition is getting very tough. Although I believe Matt Rossi has a great chance at moving onto provincals for 100m dash and Thomas Keith for high jump.

The funny thing is track was just something to keep me acitve since hockey season is over, so making it to EOSSA is surprising and exciting!

Anyways I should probably focus on my ISU draft so I'll post next week!

Running a race at a track meet is indescribable (but I'm going to try.)

As the man yells "On your mark.."the intensity of my heart beat is beating out of my chest, as if it is the wheels of a train loudly turning on the train track.

"Get set..." The hips soar up gracefully as my full attention is waiting for the final signal. Eyes open so wide I could very well be related to an owl.

*Bang* the sound of the gun blows. Head down and my legs move as fast as possible, almost like a cheetah racing through the high grass of an African reserve.

Until I reach the hand off to my partner nothing else in the world matters except this race right now. All of the students yelling and cheering is a mild noise as my vision is a tunnel pointed directly towards the left hand reaching back towards me.

Finally after the baton is flutters from my hand to my partners, the train's wheels eventually slow down as I gaze across the track observing my team mates and cheering loudly as I rush to the finish line to greet them.

Ottawa Sun
Mental Health treatments still need improvement.

By: Alicia Hillier

Rockland, Ontario - It is often assumed that those who are entered in a mental health institution are taken care of and the best procedures available are preformed for their well being, unfortunately that is often not the case.

www.Dictionary.com states that Lobotomy is the operation of cutting into a lobe, as of the brain or lung. This definition does not clearly outline the details and outcomes of the dangerous "treatment" used in the 1950's. Patients found in mental health hospitals who were often "moody" use to undergo a procedure in which the connections of the frontal lobes in the brain were sliced apart thus leaving them in a vegetable state.

The decline of lobotomy lead to the use of anti-psychotic drugs. These drugs are still used to this day since the risks of malfunctions are low..as well as the price. Once an individual intakes an anti-psychotic drug their symptoms will decrease.

Although the medications and treatments used in mental health institutions from 1950-2014 have drastically increased feeding unhealthy people drugs is not a reasonable solution. Considering the personal does not have a full, in depth understanding on the drugs they're intaking into their body and what possible side effects it may have upon them persuading these patients that "these drugs will help cure you" isn't reasonable.

Further research must be done to increase the success rate of patients entering and leaving asylums. The use of drugs and surgical procedures must be decreased and therapy group talks or other methods must taken advantage of.

Mental Health hospitals have a high potential to be successful, it just takes the cooperation and patience of the community.

Weekly Blog 14

Have you ever just felt super overwhelmed with everything going on at once and you feel as if the list of things to do and complete are endless?

I seriously can not wait for summer. I'm sure while you're reading this right now you're thinking "Wow... Alicia writes about stress 70% of the time in her blogs." With taking grade 12 chem, history (which is easy in comparison to english and chem) and english my brain is just constantly worrying about finishing work for each class. Gym on the other hand is a breeze and my 90% in that class makes up for my 75% in chemistry. PLUS I have a job at the golf course twice a week, and a job at food basics on wednesdays, and track and field uggghh.

During chemistry Mr. Kumahor had us teach a lower grade a lesson instead of a lab exam, therefore that lesson was worth 5% of our overall grade. Megan Koch and I taught our lesson on eco friendly devices and ways to save the earth. Personally I thought it was boring, little did I know we would receive a 92%! He probably just felt bad for us both considering we are passing with mid/low 70's meanwhile last semester had an 83%.

ANYWAYS, I figured out a way to tone down my stress levels! Using lavander, it really calms me down prior to a test or while studying. Also- baths help, I usually try to take a bath in between homework sets or after I come home from Track.

ISU- Thesis

In Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 the citizens are deprived of knowledge thus sacrificing the beauty and power of individuality.

1792 and the sun rays are feeling great.

This great fellow that goes by the name of Philippe Pinel had a theory that patients would heal faster and more effectively if they were treated with care and respect. Therefore the abuse I had to put up with? Gone. Dirty cells? Gone. Rude and inconsiderate tones? Gone. Finally, I feel like a normal human.

I am now allowed to exercise whenever I wish outside. The rays on my skin feel warm and soothing after a nice refreshing jog around the grounds.

My animal collar has been unhooked and my oh my does it feel great!

YES I KNOW. MY ANGER ISSUES OT ME PUT INTO AN ASYLUM. BUT DO YOU REALLY NEED TO INVITE INDIVIDUALS IN TO WATCH ME FREAK OUT?

I am totally aware of what these sick nurses are doing. They are charging these people to watch me freak out and progress into a violent person. I frustrates me so much that these stupid nurses think they have the right to treat me like a show or a play.

I am placed into this hospital to receive help for my condition, not to have people that are totally fine and wealthy egg me on into throwing a fit. Doing so is almost like running backwards instead of taking baby steps forward. I can not do this anymore.

Everyday at 3:02pm I have to take medication. They say I NEED to take it voluntarily otherwise they'll find another way to force it down me. Therefore I don't bother questioning their methods, and I just take the three lime green tablets.

Everyday is a constant repeat of the previous day. Nothing exciting ever happens, unless Billy next stall acts up and throws a temper tantrum. Any who, no matter it is November 14 or May 9 I promise you my day is black and white and each minute is the same as 24 hours prior.

To be honest I have no idea what year it is.. I'm guessing 1950's. I have been in here quite awhile but after so long, the repetition of the days gets brain washing.

Last night I couldn't sleep at it was 1972, October 5... Which happens to be my daughters birthday.

While I was up I over heard the nurses bitching as normal but this time it may benefit me. I heard my nurse "Ms. Koch" screech "DAMN RIGHT! NO PAY NO WORK! PATIENTS CHECK IN HERE DAILY AND IT IS TOO MUCH!" Ms. Baidoukov then replied "I heard we are sending some of these people home.. the ones... not insanely crazy. We just need space for the ones who desperately need help."

I then thought to myself "Jesus, that has to be me. I have slight depression over my husband who constantly beat me but in comparison to some other illness' my case is very minor." I guess all I can do is wait here and glance out my window in hope that I am released soon enough to see my baby girl.

As I'm sitting on my cold, rock hard bed I await Freeman. Freeman has preformed up to 3000 Lobotomy procedures in 1953 Athens, Greece. They say it will "cure" me and I can be back home in up to a week.. but I do not believe it.

Knowing the idiots that run these hospitals (should I say jails?) they will do almost anything to ruin my life and make it miserable. In all honesty I would much rather be at home or dead for that matter. I am border line to being totally done with this atmosphere and how I am treated.

I am not an animal, I am simply just not perfection to certain personals perspective.

*Knock Knock* "Ms. Hillier, we are ready for you! Freeman is here and will preform on you momentarily, please stay seated in bed."

Unit 5, 5.1

Introduction

Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was inspired by the author's time spent as an orderly at a mentral health facility in Menlo Park, California. Narrated by the schizophrenic patient Chief Bromden, the reader explores many of the psychiatric practices of the 50s and 60s (such as electro-convulsive shock therapy and pre-frontal lobotomy) within the context created by the power hungry Nurse Ratched.

The Task

Based on your research, record your thoughts and experiences in a journal (blog). Using your journal reflections as a guide, you will create a product (this may be a news article, and essay, a slideshow, prezi, wiki, annotated timeline, etc) comparing mental health care in the late 1950's to that of today, recommending courses of action for improvements that still need to be made.

The Process

-Explore the Mental Health History Timeline, especially noting changes that occurred in the 50 years since McMurphy's death.

Mental Health history:

People with Mental Health were feared and usually kept from other personals.

People with Mental Health were often locked up in asylums to get rid of the "problem" by preforming inhumane actions upon them.

A popular asylum was Danvers State Hospital built in 1878, to house 500. In 1940 it hit it's peak with 2300 patients... needless to say it wasn't the best environment.

The first recorded Lunatic Asylum in Europe was the Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, it has been a part of London since 1247 when it was built as a priory. It became a hospital in 1330 and admitted its first mentally ill patients in 1407.

Asylums were shut down as they opened up about abuse in 1961.

Providing funding for asylums was difficult therefore food for the patients was scarce.

Changes in the last 50 years:

People are more aware and comfortable with the idea of mental health.

Nurses can now make up to 72,000$ a year.

Techniques used on patients are not nearly as gruesome.

-Explore the history of one particular hospital through David H. Clark's article, "The Story of a Mental Hospital: Fulbourn, 1858-1983," again, taking particular note of the period between the late 1950's and the present.

History through David H. Clarks article:

Back then there was lack of funds, neglect and low morale, where as today lack in funds is not an issue nor is neglect or low morale.

Exciting new changes include: Unlocking the wards, social therapy, administrative therapy, therapeutic communities, and rehabilitation programs.

-Learn about the practice of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Electroconvulsive therapy:

Given to patients 2-3 times a week, it involves giving the patient seizures and electrically induced (Mania is a common disorder this was used on).

Usually patients we women since they're more at risk to depression then men.

Applied until the patient didn't show any symptoms.

-Learn more about the practice of Lobotomies.

Lobotomies:

Consists of cutting or scrapping into the skull and breaking the connections to and from the frontal lobes of the brain.

It was a mainstream procedure for 2 decades.

Very cruel.

-Read about the practice of Institutionalization, taking special note of changes and/or progress over time.

Institutionalization:

After complaints and speeches were made against the "jail" like institutions, patient count began to fall rapidly due to the amount of deaths.

-Go beyond. Google search terms related to your article (i.e. "mental health," "shock therapy," "electroconvulsive therapy," "lobotomy").

Mental health: a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.

Shock therapy: treatment of chronic mental conditions by electroconvulsive therapy or by inducing physiological shock.

Electroconvulsive therapy: the administration of a strong electric current that passes through the brain to induce convulsions and coma

Lobotomy: a surgical operation involving incision into the prefrontal lobe of the brain, formerly used to treat mental illness.

Asylum: an institution offering shelter and support to people who are mentally ill.

Patienta person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment.

-Based upon the information you learn, write 5 - 8 journal entries about experiences a patient might expect to have in a mental institution at any given moment in the last 60 years (make sure you specify the time in each journal entry).

-Using your journals as a basis, create a product (this may be a news article, and essay, a slideshow, prezi, wiki, annotated timeline, etc) comparing mental health care in the late 1950's to that of today, recommending courses of action for improvements that still need to be made. You can find public domain photos for your product at any of the following sites Wellcome Images, EveryStockPhoto, and Pixabay.

Weekly Blog 13

Over Easter weekend I took full advantage of the four day break and headed down towards Houston, Texas. Houston was NOT what I expected at all. When you hear "Texas" images of horses, cowboys, sand, sun and marrages appear. Little did I know, Houston was an amazing city that is very green, warm and is almost like a paradise.

My friend Maria Baidoukov is Russian therefore in Houston I got to endure the whole Russian-Orthodox Easter tradiations. To begin Easter morning we had a breakfast which included Russian pancakes called "Blini's", they are thin like a French Crepe but have a slight different texture and are often eaten with jams, fruits, maple syurp, caviare or sour cream.

Following the breakfast we ate a Russian cake which was bought from the Russian Orthodox church in Houston. It is almost like sweet bread with rasins. For the rest of the day I finished up Chemistry homework and relaxed in the sun. Finally to conclude the day, Maria's family and I experienced a Brazilian resturant. It was all you can eat with 14 different types of meat cooked on spits. Each person in the resturant had a circle card, a red side and a green side. When you would like more meat you would turn the card green, then red when you're full. Men working in the resturant would constantly glide around the room, each bringing a different type of meat.

Anyways, this whole blog entry is on food and it's making me rather hungry thus I'm going to stop there.

Unit 5, 5.2

Activity 5.2 - Study Questions

For each chapter choose two (2) questions and answer them in your blog. (This does NOT substitute for your weekly reflection)

Chapter 1 - 5

1. When Chief Bromden says "its the truth even if it didn't happen" he is referring to a couple things. For one, we have already seen at this point that the Chief has quite severe paranoia, so he is in general very unsure of his surroundings despite being in the ward the longest. We have also seen that the Chief does undergo hallucinations when he hallucinates that an Air Raid has begun in the ward while aides try to shave him, so not everything that the Chief is describing about the ward is totally realistic.
However, this passage is really the first in which it feels the Chief is the narrator of the novel, talking to the readers. So as he tells the story of what happens in the ward he is urging that we, the readers, trust that all of what he has to say is important even though it may be hallucinated to a certain extent. It gives a hint that perhaps his hallucinations do have some metaphorical value especially when it comes to certain themes in the novel. Chief means that although not everything he sees may be real, it is still truthful and important that we take it seriously.

4. Ruckly is a former Acute (temporary) patient of the ward who then became a Chronic (lifetime) patient after receiving very intense electroshock therapy or EST. This therapy takes place in a "shock shop" where essentially they are lobotomizing patients of the ward by sending electrodes or electricity through people's brains, then they come out looking dazed and function-less. Many of the Acute patients in the ward often turn into Chronic patients after going through this therapy for a period of time. After receiving so much of this therapy Ruckly is basically lobotomized and can only utter the words "ffffuck da wife" over and over. The shock therapy that the patients in the ward go through is what is being referred to as a "head installation".

Chapter 6-10

4. The doctor really seems to be a friend to McMurphy more than anything. They discover that they've gone to the same high school, and McMurphy's charismatic and positive attitude seems to rub off on Doctor Spivey like it has on the other patients of the ward. They reminisce about their high school, and about the carnivals that the school used to have every year, and the doctor suggests that maybe it'd be fun for the ward to have a carnival. This shows that the doctor is much more upbeat and confident than he was before with McMurphy energizing the ward now. He starts to plan and push for activities in the ward that will help them live a more normal life such as the carnival, with McMurphy's help.
One theme that is really pushed forward with the aid of the doctor is the theme of freedom and rebellion. With the arrival of McMurphy, the doctor and the patients both experience a sense of rebellion against Nurse Ratched and her dictatorship on everything in the ward. Everyone in the ward starts to feel like perhaps they deserve to have more freedom and live more normal lives in the ward. The doctor has been under the same dictatorship, and has had to watch all the patients suffer and never had the stomach to stand up to Nurse Ratched, letting her control what he does for the most part. But now with McMurphy he starts to propose new ideas to break the routine of the ward, such as the carnival, turning up the radio so that anyone hard of hearing can now hear it, and also using the unused storage room as a game room for some patients. The nurse would usually never even think of allowing this, but all the patients and the doctor really get behind it and start to rebel in search for that sense of freedom.

5. The purpose of chapter 10 may seem rather pointless at first but really there is quite a bit of importance to having it. Sure it's really just a few of the patients from the ward playing a monopoly game using pennies instead of dollars. But it's the simple fact that for that stretch of time, the patients that are playing Monopoly game with McMurphy just seem happier and more normal than they have at any other point in the novel to this point. As they sit around joking and laughing with each other while playing, it seems as though perhaps the simple game is better therapy for the patients than the group sessions they have.
Another thing that this chapter brings a bit of attention to is the fact that McMurphy obviously wins all of the money in the end and collects all the properties. Much like in the game, McMurphy has control over his own mind and individuality, which allows him to win in the game and get what he wants in the ward. His "monopoly" on himself allows him to succeed in the ward much more than any other patient.

Chapter 11 - 15

2. The obvious irony in the "A man that would run away from a place as nice as this, why; there'd be something wrong with him." statement by the Public Relations man has to do with the "something wrong with him" part. While the Chief does explain that the new hospital is much better in comparison to the old one, clearly it is still not ideal at all for the patients. The irony in the statement obviously lies in the fact that everyone in the mental hospital is in there because something has been deemed wrong with them. So going by that statement by the Public Relations man, maybe they all want to run away from the hospital they're in. Even more irony is that by the way people are treated at the hospital and the conditions they live in, it seems that anyone in their right mind would want to escape from it. This is further proven by the fact that McMurphy says he wants to escape badly, and he truly is the most sane person there.

4. The significance of the way that Old Rawler committed suicide is quite evident. Chief hears that the man cut off his testicles and bled to death while on the toilet. This method of suicide was symbolic of perhaps how all the men in the mental hospital feel somewhat emasculated not only by Nurse Ratched but by their overall confinement in the ward. This suicide is definitely trying to push the theme of confinement in the play and what it can do to a man. With things like the strict routine all the patients follow, and the shock therapy that they undergo often, they clearly have all been fairly emasculated or constricted by the ward. Nurse Ratched has basically total control over all the men in the ward and what they do on a daily basis, thus the cutting off of the testicles is very symbolic in the way the men are emasculated throughout the novel.

Chapter 16 - 20

3. Cheswick's death in the novel comes shortly after McMurphy realizes that he might want to start being nice to Nurse Ratchet so that he can actually one day leave the mental hospital instead of having the Nurse keep him there forever like some of the other patients. So when Cheswick decides to stand up to the Nurse about how she controls their cigarettes even though they are the ones buying their own, he expects McMurphy to back him up during the meeting. When McMurphy keeps his mouth shut because he now wants to be nice to the Nurse, Cheswick throws an incredible tantrum and even though all of the patients (including Cheswick) realize that McMurphy is smart and has to do this, Cheswick still proceeds to commit suicide and drown himself. This shows the amount of influence McMurphy has over the patients in the ward.    They all look to him as the one to help lead them to victory in rebellion against Nurse Ratched, because if he doesn't at least help then they simply don't have the confidence to do it on their own. His confidence and audacity to stand up to the Nurse when no one else in the ward could or would was what was giving so many of the men hope that things could get better in their lives. When Cheswick saw that maybe McMurphy had given up, and the Nurse had won, he realized that things would just go back to the way they were and thus he saw no other choice but to kill himself. McMurphy really is the rehabilitation for the patients of the ward, when he wasn't there they had nothing, no hope. With the hope that he gave them, came self confidence as well, so much self confidence that Cheswick decided to bring up the cigarette issue. But with McMurphy giving in to the system, without rebellion, the feeling of having no hope soon returned for the patients and especially Cheswick, causing him to not want to live. That's the kind of influence McMurphy has on the patients.
4. The haggard and puzzled look on McMurphy's face does reveal that he is starting to change as a character to this point. He was once so confident, upbeat, and rebellious towards the system of the ward however with all the realizations he has had now he isn't as confident or rebellious at all. McMurphy agrees with Scanlon's comment "damned if you do and damned if you don't" which is exactly the way he is feeling right now. McMurphy realizes that if he rebels, it'll only get him more time spent in the ward or worse, in shock therapy. Then if he doesn't rebel, well there's still definitely no guarantee that he'll ever get out and he'll have to do basically anything the Nurse tells him to, so there's no winning situation to McMurphy.             This is really what the look on McMurphy's face symbolizes in terms of his character's development, he is at a crossroads and doesn't see a path that he can choose where he'll be free again. He is finally feeling perhaps what every other man in the hospital feels, trapped with no way of getting out regardless of what is done. The Nurse is the one in control of everyone's future at the ward, and this realization hits McMurphy hard and is what causes him to be "haggard and puzzled".

Chapter 21 - 25

2. What McMurphy means by this is that it isn't all the Nurse's fault as to why the ward is run like it is. Sure, she is a part of it but she's really just a part of the whole system in general. Similar to the "Combine Machine" that the Chief often talks about, McMurphy sees the big picture as a large system that is corrupted from the top down, and the nurse is only a small part of this, if she weren't there it would still be pretty much the same. Although most of the patients do not see this, the Chief does understand what McMurphy is saying, that it is all a larger system in place than just the one that the Nurse imposes on everyone. Sure the Nurse is the one taking in everyone to the Shock Shop, but that's clearly what the government or whoever is running the hospital wants. Like Harding says, "The public wants a quick fix" so that's exactly what the Shock Shop gives them. McMurphy sees that the system doesn't really care about how the patients are treated in the ward, in fact they'd probably rather have them all just be like robots that do everything the Nurse asks and never have the guts to leave the hospital, that way the real world doesn't have to deal with them. So while the Nurse is definitely a part of the problem, she is also not the whole problem by any means.

3. I believe that this act by McMurphy was indeed premeditated due to his realization of how important and influential he can be for all the other patients, and that they are somewhat doomed without his leadership. McMurphy realizes that he has succumb to the power of the "Combine" by starting to obey everything he is told to do. Once he realizes this, he decides to take on his rebellion again but this time he knows very well what he is getting himself into. He knows that he is risking potentially having to stay at the ward a lot longer or perhaps forever, however he decides that for the better of the other patients, he needs to be a leader for them in order to help them. Before he was a leader for them without his actual knowledge of how influential he was, but after the Cheswick incident he sees that he really does mean a great deal to the other patients and their well-being. This is what leads him to start his rebellion again and punch the glass of the Nurse's office.
The reason he chooses to do something insanely violent and out of the blue, shows everyone that he means business this time. He is done with the funny little jokes and jabs at the Nurse and all the little games, he is serious this time because he's doing it for the benefit of all the men in the ward, and not just for his amusement like before. The breaking of the glass is symbolic of the fact that yes everyone is aware of the power that Nurse Ratched has in the ward, however everyone should know that this power is also penetrable or "breakable", just like the glass was.

Chapter 26 - 29

2. What prompts Chief to jump into the fight against the orderlies and help McMurphy out is the realization that he and the other patients had once McMurphy decided to defend George. When McMurphy jumped in selflessly to confront the orderly that was giving George a hard time in the shower, it showed all of the men that McMurphy could indeed do things to help them out that weren't for his own benefit. Chief realizes this, that McMurphy is yet again willingly putting his own well-being and future at the ward at risk, solely for the purpose of helping out one of the other men in the ward. This is why Chief jumps into the fight because he admires the bravery and selflessness of McMurphy and shares this bravery to help him out.                           What this shows in terms of the development of the Chief's character, is that he has so much regained self-confidence and strength now. McMurphy aided immensely in this self-renewal for the Chief, just lifting his spirits and letting him see through the "fog" finally for good. It also showed how much admiration and respect the Chief has for McMurphy, after observing all of his actions throughout the novel. The Chief considers McMurphy not only someone whom he genuinely respects in the ward but also someone that he considers his friend, thus springing him to help out McMurphy in the fight.

6. I believe that the Chief did the right thing by smothering McMurphy, while it must have been hard to do, it was simply something that had to be done. McMurphy knew the consequence that would likely surface from his attacking the Nurse would be death or something close to it. The Nurse tried to play her last card by lobotomizing him for his actions. What this would have done is shown future patients of the ward that she is still to be feared and McMurphy would have been another visible example of the work of Nurse Ratched. He would have been walking around the ward being just a vegetable, just someone that once tried to defy Nurse Ratched and she got the better of him.
This is why what the Chief did was the right thing, and I would have done the same. This way, McMurphy maintained dignity in his death, and could remain a symbol of rebellion and freedom for everyone on the ward. The man who broke down Nurse Ratched and freed almost all the voluntary patients of the ward who would have otherwise been stuck there for their entire life.I think that McMurphy would want to die for some dignified reason, and dying for the freedom of many others is much more dignified than being a vegetable and allowing for the sufferance of many more.

"A dog is a man's best friend" more like "A dog is a ladies best friend" my little yorkie is named Jake and he is my pride and joy. We got jake in 2010 in Moscow, Russia.

They say that dog's have personalities of their own... guess what, they really do. Jake is such a suck up and demands attention 24/7. He is very quite and loves cuddles and most of all, to play ball. My mom thinks that Jake understands her when she speaks so needless to say she looks like a crazy woman most of the time.

Jake does not have long hair with bows in his hair (even though the bows would be fine with me), because my dad doesn't approve. Although, Jake has a bumble bee costume, a "police" dog tshirt, an olympic Team Russia jacket, a bandana, and little boots (his least favourite).

My dog is unique from other dogs in numerous ways, he thinks hes a human, constantly licks the air, and doesn't like any other breed of dog unless it's a yorkie. And when he is around another yorkie, he is the boss. If he wants to play around, they will play. If he wants to jsut lay down, they will lay down. If he wants to run around the yard, they will run around the yard. In other words, you could say Jake is a drama "King".

Weekly Blog 11

Have you ever just been super pissed off after seeing an advertisement that is way too over the top and is exagerated to the max. Fast food adverts are by far the worst, they'll show a mouth watering milkshake with fluffy whip cream, and a perfectly red cherry. Meanwhile you will show up to the resturatant and get a watery milkshake that is more water than ice cream and it tastes disgusting. What do I call that? A huge disapointment.

I just don't get why companies do such a thing. A costumer will eventually see how flase the advert is and not purchase the item again, therefore their sales SHOULD decrease...but does it?

I guess the places like McDonalds false advertisements aren't a big deal since people only get what you pay for...quality wise. Thus, buying a milkshake for 6.99$ at an old fashioned diner you expect and will get the best milkshake they can make. Although if you go to McDonalds and buy a .99 cent milkshake and it tastes like water, you really can't complain.

It's just rather crappy how the adverts these days are misleading, although getting what you pay for is fair in my opinion.

Weekly Blog 10

I cannot put my excitement into words, but on April 17 I am going to Houston, Texas to visit my friend for 5 days. Her name is Maria Baidoukov, we met the summer before grade 6 and have been close ever since. We spent grades 6-9 practically attached at the hip and ever since we both moved from Moscow it's been rough.

The fact I get to wear shorts, tank tops and tan for 5 days makes it worth while. Shopping, swimming, tanning and lots of laughs.

I'm insanely sick of this snow and bitter cold weather in Rockland, the more I think about it, the more I can't wait to get away.

To be honest I have no idea what to expect in Texas. Will I get off the plane and just see cowboys on horses? A city? I do not have even the slightest idea. OH well. I'm sure my blog the week I'm back will be ALL about the trip...sooooo keep ya posted!

The play itself (summative)

Act I, Scene 1

Setting: The setting of this scene is outside in a very isolated or private area. It's outside due to the thunder and lightning in the background (which occurs numerous times throughout the play).

Background: There isn't much of a background prior to this scene, other than basic knowledge on witch craft. During the Elizabethan era it was thought that witches were the cause of random, horrendous
events. Also no one trusted these mysterious people (usually ladies) and "witch hunting" was an event that took place at the time.

Characterization: For this particular scene the actors should be familiar with the appearance and behaviour of the witches. Often they were gruesome or manly looking, and very uncomfortable to be around due to their capabilities and powers.

Act II, Scene 1

Setting: The setting in act 2, scene 1 takes place late at night after everyone has gone to bed in Macbeth's house. Apparently the moon has set according to Fleance.

Background: The background needed to fully understand this scene is how lack of sleep during the Elizabethan era was frowned upon. At this time, lack of sleep was a signal that someone is not in their right mind, and they may be stressed or going insane.

Characterization: For the role of Macbeth it is important that the actor is aware that Macbeth is going crazy and that he is hallucinating. Also the ambition he has to kill Duncan has him excited. The actor for Banquo would have to know that his deprived sleep is from the fear of what the witches said, and how Macbeth is interpreting it.

Act III, Scene 3

Setting: Prior to sunset, on a route that Banqou often uses to walk to the palace.

Background: In order for the actors to be successful in this scene, it is important that they're dramatic during the murder and killing scenes. During this time period it was key that violence and murder was a big component of the play, using only the best props and actors must be at their best.

Characterization: Actors who are playing the role of Banquo must put forth his best effort and create a realistic death, while slowing muttering his last words to Fleance to leave the scene. Once again it is important that all killing is realistic as possible to please the crowd otherwise food will be thrown at them.

Act IV, Scene 2

Setting: The scene takes place at Macduff's house, after Lady Macduff has learned that Macduff has fled.

Background: The background needed for this scene is just the role of the female in a marriage during the Elizabethan era. The husband was relied on a lot at this time, and Lady Macduff is having a very hard time being realistic about what will happen now that Macduff is gone. It would be very hard for her to find a decent job, and it would be hard for her to keep her family satisfied without food. Also, a good background on violence at the time.

Characterization: Lady Macduff has to be aware of her role in society at the time, therefore she would have to be unsure and startled over her husband fleeing. Once again the actors for the murderers would have to be flawless and able to put themselves out on the line during every show for a great performance.

Act V, Scene 5

Setting: This scene takes place at Macbeth's castle in Dunsinane, prior to the battle led by Malcolm and Macduff.

Background: The background which is necessary for this scene is the basic definition of a tragic hero, and that all tragic heroes lives come to an end. Usually with a "V8" moment where they notice their major flaw.

Characterization: The actor for Macbeth stars in his most important scene here. The speech after his wife's death has to be deep, and show sorrow as he finally comes to grip with mortality. Then a major mood switch as Macbeth quickly comes to realize he is probably the next to die, lastly he realizes his fatal flaw and that his death is nearly seconds away.

Weekly Blog 9

Wednesdays are the worst. You're exhausted, can hardly keep your eyes open, not to mention you're expected to pay attention and take in information for 4 classes. It just isn't reasonable, especially when it comes around to tests, assignments or quizes.

A - "When did we learn this?" (Someone whispers to their neighbour)
B - "Oh last Wednesday"
A - "Oh.. you mean the day when I was a zombie and kept passing out?"

My solution for this is simple. Every Wednesday school should start at 9:20. That gives all students an extra hour of sleep. During this time teachers could have morning meetings, catch up on marking or even sleep in themselves.

The school day on Wednesday wouldn't end later, all classes would just be decreased to 55 minutes. I mean REALLY who wouldn't benefit from that? It would only help our learning and keep us healthy.

Debate News Report

Shots fired

On Friday March 21, 2014 the second round of three debates took place in Mr. Murray’s grade 11 English class. The topic of the debate was whether or not the witches actually had an impact on Macbeth’s actions. Arguing on the negative side was Matthew Rossi, Brennen Beattie and Thomas Keith. Meanwhile arguing that the witches did indeed control Macbeth’s decisions, you could find Christina, Amy and James.

The debate followed the classic introduction, three argument rounds, free for all and finally a conclusion. The first round began with Christina, she was very well prepared and discussed how Macbeth was used as a puppet. Shots were fired once Christina drew a picture of Thomas Keith’s blog, where it was evident that he agreed with the apposing side. Thomas then stated his argument but was nervous and spoke very quiet. The affirmative side then had to rebuttal, they delivered a solid rebuttal and pointed out major flaws. Matt then strongly rebutted for the negative side and stated that Thomas was simply writing what Mr. Murray wanted to hear, not what his honest opinion was.

The second round then commenced as Amy had long, dragged out argument which took over 5 minutes therefore she was cut off. Brennen Beattie then introduced his argument that Macbeth had his own ambition to become king, and that he would have proceeded with the same actions regardless of the witches’ prophecy. Brennen paced himself through out his speech therefore making it easy to understand. Both rebuttals were evenly matched with numerous examples to back them up.

Then, the free for all horn was blown. Both teams screaming at each other, while the affirmative side whips out witch figures to mock the apposing side. Thomas then states, “What grade are we in? Kindergarten? Focus on the debate rather then making art projects!” The audience then got very involved, trying to project both sides but finally the closing horn was blown. The third round then began with James; he seemed extremely calm during his speech yet very firm. Matthew Rossi then began to talk about how the witches may have just been a myth in Macbeth’s head. Finally, following each side’s rebuttals and conclusions each side continued to throw insults and build upon their arguments.

The judges then left the room for a while to discuss their final results. Mr. Murray then talked to the class, explaining that the debate could go either way due to the fact each side had their strong and weak areas. After the judges finished deliberating, the came to a final decision that the negative side was the winner due to their timing for the arguments, strong rebuttals and valid arguments.  Overall, a well done effort by each side!
